School Violence Fast Facts:
- Physical attacks
without a weapon, theft/larceny and vandalism are more common in schools
than more serious incidents.
- Twenty-four percent
of middle school/junior high schools reported fights or attacks with
a weapon for an estimated 7,576 incidents.
- There are 100
times more guns in the hands of children attending American schools
than principals have been reporting to Congress.
- Thirty-six percent
of students reported seeing hate-related graffiti at school.
- Annually, there
are 133,700 violent crimes against teachers at school and 217,400 thefts
from teachers at school.
- According to the
most recent Gun-Free Schools Act Report, 3,523 students are expelled
from school for bringing a firearm on campus. Fifty-seven percent involved
high school; thirty-three percent involved junior/middle school students;
and ten percent involved elementary school students.
- Students ages
12 through 18 were victims of more than 2.7 million total crimes on
campus.
The

It
is true that creating safe schools is the responsibility of the entire
community in which a school or school system resides, but responsibility
for maintaining them on a day-to-day basis lies principally with school

major problems in the past that maintaining their "safe" school means
staying to the course they are on. This misconception could lead to tragedy.
